Conserve Groundwater and your Wallet - World Water Day 2022

World Water Day occurs on the 22nd of March each year, and centres around celebrating water and raising awareness of the 2 million people living without access to safe drinking water. For World Water Day 2022, the theme is Groundwater. Almost all of the liquid freshwater in the world is Groundwater, so it is imperative that we protect it.

Groundwater conservation has often been overlooked as many people don't think it affects them. However, in fact, an increasing population, changing lifestyles, and a growth in erratic weather patterns have led to heavy pressure being put on our water supply.

Conserving our groundwater not only saves the environment but your wallet too! With talks of climate change heating up around the world, we thought it would be best to share some easy tips to conserve your water supply.

Reduce your water usage, don’t restrict

Living in the rainy UK, you might be thinking to yourself why the need to save water? The scary fact is the South East of England has less water available per person than Sudan and Syria. This is due to one-third of water being wasted by people that are not conscious of their impact on the supply. A common waste practice is when water runs down the toilet or plug hole without being used.

This doesn't mean that you can't use water, it just means being more mindful with how much you use, how you use it, and preventing waste.

Water-Saving Tips

Just reminding you of the run of the mill water-saving tips:

  • Turn the tap off while you’re brushing your teeth
  • Use leftover water from the previous night to water household plants
  • Try skipping the bath, and rather hop in the shower.
  • Don’t use your toilet as a dustbin
  • Invest in a water butt that connects to your drainpipe in your garden
  • Don't run your washing machine until you have a full load
  • Don't run your dishwasher until it's full

Protecting Ground Water Tips

It's not just about reducing our usage of water; we need to protect the quality of our groundwater too. Did you know that the chemicals you use around your home and garden can end up polluting the groundwater? Here are some tips to protect our fresh water.

  • Reduce chemical usage in your garden and home
  • Dispose of harmful chemicals appropriately, not down drains
  • Try to use non-toxic/natural products around the house where you can
  • Store fuels & chemicals safely, ensure there are no leaks
  • Ensure septic systems are inspected regularly
We hope that this post was informative! World Water Day is 22 March every year, please bear these tips in mind in your day-to-day life.
